Laser vision correction includes LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy). LASIK uses the excimer laser to reshape the underlying surface of the cornea to correct nearsightedness and farsightedness. To accomplish this, Savannah LASIK surgeon Dr. Thomas Campen surgically creates a very thin flap on the surface of the cornea. The excimer laser then reshapes the underlying area. The thin flap is then repositioned, with improvement of vision. There is little to no pain involved, and often glasses are no longer necessary.
PRK also reshapes the cornea, but before the laser is used, a small amount of the corneal surface is gently removed. The excimer laser is then used to create a new corneal shape to correct vision. The corneal surface regenerates over the next several days, with improvement of vision. In contrast to LASIK, there is some irritation to the eyes during these several days while the cornea cells regenerate. Both procedures are permanent, but as eyes change with time, some enhancements could be necessary for Hilton Head / Savannah LASIK and PRK patients.
