Eye Exams

Dr. Campen recommends adults have regular eye exams for several reasons. First, an eye exam is a great opportunity to check your eye glass or contact lens prescriptions and make sure they're correct. It's also a good time to check the eyes for signs of disease, as well as other problems that could cause vision loss, such as a refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism). Children should have regular eye exams as well, to make sure their vision is developing normally and not preventing them from succeeding academically.

Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetic eye diseases are eye problems that people diagnosed with diabetes may be at risk for. The most common diabetic eye disease is diabetic retinopathy. People with diabetic retinopathy have blood vessels in the retina that swell and leak fluid. This can severely affect a person's vision and even cause blindness. Lasers may be used to seal the leaking blood vessels or shrink or eliminate abnormal blood vessels.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness, is a group of eye conditions in which an increase in eye fluid pressure damages the optic nerve. The optic nerve is responsible for transmitting information from the eye to the brain. Glaucoma does not manifest in any symptoms until it has progressed significantly and caused a loss in vision.

There are several ways to treat glaucoma; the least invasive is medicinal eye drops to lower the pressure within the eye. Other options include laser therapy or glaucoma surgery. Dr. Campen will explain the available options during a personal appointment, and recommend the course of treatment that he feels will have the best outcome.
